Vascular Abnormalities

Vascular lesions are abnormalities involving the blood distribution system, arteries, veins and capillaries. Some of the more common vascular lesions such as varicose veins, telangiectasias or spider veins and cherry hemangiomas are widely prevalent in the population. Other vascular lesions like cavernous hemangiomas, port wine stain birthmarks and venous lakes are not as common.

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that causes redness and swelling, primarily on the face. A physician who specializes in this condition such as a dermatologist should manage patients with rosacea. Laser therapy does have a role in treating some forms of this condition.

Laser therapy is a proven treatment for some of the vascular lesions such as telangiectasias or spider veins, port wine stain birthmarks, and strawberry hemangiomas. The Laser can treat legveins up to2 mm. in width.

In fact, the latest advances in laser technology have given us a method for removal that is safer, faster and more effective than any previous treatment. All vascular lesions vary in severity, for example, telangiectasias, or broken blood vessels, usually involve single vessels and are often harmless. Port wine stains, on the other hand, tend to grow larger as the patient ages. These will also darken in color and will never go away if left untreated.

Nearly all patients with telangiectasias and cherry angiomas enjoy positive results; however there are a few patients where vascular lasers are not as successful. Often, those with pigmented skin or those having a dark tan will often not receive the full benefit from laser treatments. Small varicose veins are easily treated but if they are a result of larger veins being incontinent your results will be short lived and result in disappointment. Your skin and supporting structures are unique to you and only after a thorough evaluation by a specialist can an effective plan be developed and expectations presented.

The numbers of treatments vary depending on the type and severity of the lesion. A cherry Angioma may take one treatment or a Venous Lake may take two or three treatments to correct. A Port Wine Stain Birthmark often requires 6-18 treatments.

In all cases your therapy is determined after your medical history, physical examination and your expectations are evaluated during your consultation. All treatment plans are individualized to meet your particular needs.
